Phagwara, October 21: Member Parliament Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal on Wednesday held a meeting with around 198 shopkeepers operating from rented properties owned by the Phagwara Municipal Corporation to apprise them of the ‘Meri Dukan Mere Naam’ scheme.
The meeting was held at the MC office in the presence of Mayor Rampal Uppal and MC Commissioner Randeep Singh Heer.

Under the scheme, shopkeepers operating from rented properties owned by urban local bodies can acquire ownership of their shops by paying the prescribed charges to the civic body.
Addressing the shopkeepers, Dr Chabbewal said that those running businesses from municipal properties could become owners by paying the prescribed amount calculated on the basis of the collector rate. To qualify for the scheme, a shopkeeper must have been operating from the concerned property for at least 12 years. He said that around 198 shops owned by the Municipal Corporation were being operated by shopkeepers in Phagwara and that beneficiaries had been divided into three categories based on their respective income slabs.

The MP said that applications could be submitted at Municipal Council and Municipal Corporation offices till November 6, 2026. He added that the entire process would be completed within a stipulated timeframe. He further informed the shopkeepers that an SDM-level committee would scrutinise the applications, while a DC-level committee would determine the prices. Subsequently, the respective local bodies would pass resolutions to complete the ownership transfer process.
